Geography

At Little Mead Primary Academy, we are passionate about developing curious geographers who have a broad knowledge base to draw from and who are equipped with the investigative skills needed to find out more.

KS1 Geography

Our KS1 Geography curriculum has been developed to guide our young learners on an exciting geographical journey of discovery, starting right from their own doorstep. By first exploring their immediate context, our students build a solid understanding of the world around them before expanding their learning to explore geographical settings beyond their own experiences.

The KS1 Geography curriculum places a strong emphasis on geographical fieldwork, encouraging our children to engage actively with their environment. Through hands-on investigations, they learn to ask insightful questions, design studies, collect simple data, and draw meaningful conclusions about their surroundings. This approach nurtures their curiosity and equips them with essential skills to understand and appreciate the details of our world.

Our Geography curriculum is also designed to showcase the diverse landscapes, cultures, and natural wonders that make our planet extraordinary. Through interactive and engaging lessons, we aim to inspire in our children a sense of awe and appreciation for the beauty and complexity of the world we live in.

As our students progress through KS1, they are continually prepared for the more advanced geographical concepts and skills they will encounter in KS2. We carefully lay the groundwork for future learning, ensuring that each child is ready to delve deeper into the subject as they move up through the school.

KS2 Geography

In KS2, children study Geography using the Opening Worlds scheme. The Opening Worlds Geography curriculum enables pupils to learn about many aspects of the contemporary world at different scales (local to global). The past world provides context for the present world and then geographers predict on to the future. The potential range of material to study is vast! In this curriculum, the children are taught through carefully selected and woven together important geographical themes (such as settlement, rivers, sustainability) with place studies (such as North Wales, UK, South America) and case studies (such as deforestation in the Amazon Rainforest) to give a comprehensive grounding in Geography. The Opening Worlds curriculum provides carefully structured knowledge about our complex world for Key Stage 2 pupils. It meets and exceeds Geography requirements in the National Curriculum for England and provides an excellent foundation for Key Stage 3 and GCSE.
