History

At Little Mead Primary Academy we provide a high quality history education which will help pupils to gain coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain's past and that of the wider world. 

KS1 History

In KS1, the History curriculum has been thoughtfully designed to engage and inspire our younger learners. Our curriculum is rooted in the National Curriculum and in the rich context of our students' lives and the community they are part of. Children learn about their own historical context, and then move to exploring the History of their local area through studies of significant individuals and historical events. Furthermore, the KS1 History curriculum emphasises the development of historical skills, ensuring that each child is equipped to enquire, investigate, and interrogate the past as a budding historian.

Our approach to History lessons in KS1 is hands-on and experiential. We believe that children learn best when they are actively involved, and our lessons are planned to be dynamic and exciting. Whether they are exploring the stories of significant individuals, investigating artefacts, or re-enacting historical events, our students are immersed in learning activities that make History come alive.

The KS1 History curriculum provides our children with a strong foundation for their transition to KS2. By focusing on skills such as critical thinking, analysis, and inquiry, children are prepared for the more detailed and complex historical concepts they will encounter in KS2. Through this approach, we aim to foster a lifelong interest in History and to prepare our students with the tools they need to explore and understand the world around them.

KS2 History

In KS2, children study History using the Opening Worlds scheme. In studying History as a discipline through Opening Worlds, pupils will use the concepts of continuity and change, cause and consequence, similarity and difference, and significance, to make connections. Pupils are also guided to draw contrasts, analyse trends, frame historically valid questions and create their own structured accounts, including written narratives and analyses. In addition, pupils practise the methods of historical enquiry, understand how evidence is used rigorously to make historical claims, gain familiarity with diverse primary sources that the past leaves behind and discern how and why subsequent arguments and interpretations of the past have been constructed.
